Welgevonden Game Reserve
The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is situated on the Waterberg Plateau. It is a malaria free reserve consisting of mountainous terrain, with occasional farm lands that have been allowed to regenerate since the reserve’s proclamation. With over40,000 hectares of private game reserve, Welgevonden was developed on the basis of a freehold title, with the reserve being divided up and sold to private entities for the purposes of private or commercial ecotourism. It is a well managed reserve with all the title holders taking responsibility for the reserve.
The proclamation of Marakele National Park and the development of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve have added significant impetus to conservation efforts in the region. There are future plans to remove the fence line between Welgevonden and Marakele, which will allow movement of animals between the two properties.
Following one of the largest game relocation programmes ever undertaken on private land, Welgevonden once again became home to the "big five" - lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino as well as many species of antelope, zebra, giraffe, baboon, hyena, wild dog, and other fauna foraging on planes and verdant slopes, while perennial waters hide crocodile and offers sustenance to a huge variety of birds.
The wild beauty of the Waterberg region offers a variety of habitats: riverine scrub, woodland, grassland, fertile valleys and great tracts of water - these offer a natural paradise for animals and birds for the visitor to view.
