North of Johannesburg and Pretoria, and blessed with magnificent mountain scenery, Limpopo Province now offers malaria-free game viewing. Several generations ago, this area was home to a variety of wild animals, like giraffe, impala, bushbuck, lion, hyena, buffalo, elephant and many more. However, the requirements of man the farmer and hunter resulted in the depletion of this area in favour of cattle farms. Thankfully, the process has been reversed, and areas in the important Waterberg biosphere have been restocked with game.
In the heart of the Waterberg’s Big Five country, Entabeni is aptly named – the place of the mountain in the local language.
Covering more than 22000 hectares of bushveld, ravines, savanna, sandy wetlands and wooded hills, it offers various types of quality accommodation and a flexible daily programme, including game drives and guided walks with a ranger, and with optional extras such as a visit to a local Pedi village, guided horse trails, helicopter flights and meals on Hanglip Mountain, sunset boat cruises, children’s eco-educational programmes and beauty treatments.
Because of the 5 different ecosystems within the reserve, game viewing and bird watching are most rewarding in terms of the variety of species to be seen and identified by knowledgeable and friendly rangers. The upper escarpment is mostly grassland dominated by the most beautiful crags, while a drive down between the cliffs, where a gurgling stream beckons, takes you to the warmer sandy wetlands of the lower escarpment.
Fromhigh on a hill overlooking Entabeni Lake,a perfect setting with spectacular bird’s-eye views to the peace and traquility of a lake side setting. The Lodges in the Entabeni Reserve are setwith breathtaking views.
