For nature lovers the most notable feature of this, the most northern of South Africa's provinces, is the fact that the biggest part of the great Kruger National Park is housed within it. Here one can see the Big Five and a myriad of other animals, plants and birds.
Bordering the Kruger lies a number of game farms and private game reserves, including Timbavati, where the famous white lions can be seen. Other sites include the Magoebaskloof, and Pietersburg, the main city of the area, has a municipal game reserve well worth visiting. One can pay a visit to the Modjaji Nature Reserve, near Tzaneen, home of the mythical Rain Queen of the Lobedu tribe.
The capital city of the Limpopo Province is Polokwane, meaning ‘Place of Safety’. It is a fitting name for this large metropolitan complex in the north and a major economic centre. The city serves a rich agricultural district.
The proximity of Polokwane to the neighbouring countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mocambique and Swaziland, as well as its convenient distance from the Kruger National Park and Magoebaskloof, make it a perfect gateway city and good destination in itself.
Limpopo is home to numerous nature reserves, national parks and private game reserves. Besides the well-known national parks, such as the Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe and Marakele, approximately 50 furthernature and game reserves exist in this exquisite province that reflect the diversity of this pristine part of the world.Thesereserves have the dual task of ecological conservation of unique destinations as well as the development of eco-tourism projects in co-operation with the respective local communities.
