Hongonyi wildlife reserve is situated in the Northern Province, in the heart of “Big Five Country”. Hongonyi, the local name for wildebeest, which is frequently seen in the area, covers about 1000ha. The original game lodge has been refurbished with respect for tradition and now contains all modern conveniences. This 3 star establishment with its refreshingly different ambience and informal relaxed atmosphere offers the wildlife enthusiast many photo opportunities and wonderful sightings at affordable rates.

At Hongonyi you can expect to see at least 20 different mammals and 250 species of birds. Witness Africa’s most glorious sunsets with sundowners on an evening game drive in an open 4 x 4 safari vehicle, and experience the thrill of close encounters with our big game, especially Rhino, Buffalo, Leopard, Cheetah and Spotted Hyena.

Enjoy exhilarating sunrise safaris on foot with experienced guides who are eager to part with their knowledge of the African bush, and show some of the smaller wonders that nature has provided, including the ’little five’ namely; The Ant Lion, Elephant Shrew, Leopard Tortois, Redbilled Buffalo Weaver Bird and Rhinoceros Beetle.

Enjoy the abundant bird life, butterflies, dragonflies and colourful arrays of wild flowers that mingle with the fragrances of the African bush.

Night sightings of the elusive Bush Baby, Serval, Civet and Aardvark add to the romance of a full moon in the evening sky, or the millions of stars that surround and comfort us on a dark African night. The world famous Kruger National Park is within a 30 minute drive from Hongonyi and many other places of interest are also nearby.

The unforgettable adventure of an early morning game drive or bush walk is followed by a hearty breakfast served in Hongonyi’s lapa. During the day our guests can soak up the African sun and take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool or simply relax with a good book in the bush lounge where refreshments are served all day. In the evening our guests enjoy delicious bushveld cuisine served under the African sky around a roaring campfire in Hongonyi’s traditional boma, an open-air “dining room”.

Hongonyi is ideally situated and many other places of interest can be reached within a half hour’s drive.
